The Old Man and the Sea Review

The book <The Old Man and the Sea> was written by Ernest Hemingway. It was written to give motivate young people during 1950’s in America. Since that was the time when suicide rate rose due to many failures of people. Many people gave up their lives because of continuous failures. There are few reasons I would love to suggest this book to many people.

The book targeted 1950’s people back in America however this book seems essential to many people nowadays. The society nowadays have many flaws which lead to failures to many people. Many people lost their hopes and don’t have strength to get up and start everything again. Especially people still commit suicide because of financial problems, jobs, schools and other personal conflict. After reading this book can change your life, you can live totally different life compare to the past. The book does not just talks about how to catch a fish or how the old man failed to catch a fish. It expresses the emotion of the old man and confidence.

When you are living your life, what do you think is the most important? It could be love, money, accomplishment, family, health, dream, job and other things but what do you need to achieve you goal? The answer is confidence. All people have tomorrow which means that we have hopes to carry. Some people might not notice or are afraid to wake up on the next day because they have already lost their hopes. I suggest this book to you, you need this, you need hope.

We the Common- Review

The author does a pretty amazing job reviewing the music album,’ We the common”. She gives a background of the album and doesn’t directly start reviewing the content of the album which is good for the readers who haven’t experienced it before. Also the review does fairly well when it comes to drawing attention of the readers like me who don’t have much interest in the subject.

In the second paragraph of the review, the author reviews the album in detail mentioning the songs that stand out in the album. She also throws light on the background of some of the songs in the album and also points out the problems with some of the songs like “clouds for brains” and ” the day long”. The author in this review portrays the connection between the songs and the personal experience of the composer that helps readers understand the sentiments behind the songs.

The Crescent City’s Greatest Po’ Boys

This review is a good example to write a food review. Garbarino is very specific with the flavors of the food and the history of them. He doesn’t tell but instead he shows the details. The review has many headlines of different Po boy restaurant. His structure of the review was very organize. I didn’t think reviews could be put into this many words. After reading this review, it helped me write my essay. I see that there are some negatives in reviews so I will try to add a equal amount of positive and negative reviews to my essay. After reading Pitchfork, I realized that you could compare your movie, book, or restaurant to another one. I will also that as well to make my review better.

Review Homework

The Crescent City’s Greatest Po’Boys is a great example of a review that the textbook gives. It is structured very well, concise, and stays on topic. It is very good that the author talks about the history of the sandwich and outlines the debates that have sprung up over the sandwich and the rivalries that have developed between passionate shop owners. He also ends his review with an evaluation of the city’s eight best sandwiches, describing each in enough detail to appeal to audiences all like the book says a good review should.

With that in mind, I feel that this is a great example to write my paper off of. It would be best to follow the structure and flow of this review in my essay in order to make my point clear. Following this structure, I will add my own persuasive tone and figurative language to really make my essay my own.

Review of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, We the Common

The review of “Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, We the Common “, by Lindsay Zoladz not only made me look at music in a different way but it also was also very successful in drawing my attention to a subject which is not of my interest. Zoladz draws a very clear comparison with the singer, Thao Nguyen’s personal life experience. Through his review he relates all the songs of the album with one or the other life experience’s of Thao, thus making the songs feel more alive and real. He describes the last song, “Age of Ice” as, “another track that seems to address the emotional life of the wanderer”. These descriptions not only help the readers to get a good review about that album but helps them to fell the experience the singer herself faced while writing them. This automatically enriches the experience of the listeners and thus satisfies the purpose of the singer. Zoladz precisely uses the descriptions of the beats, tune, instruments to make the review feel alive, thus providing exactly what the audience needs! Even tough while praising Thao’s abilities he doesn’t forget to mention the flaws in the album to provide an unbiased review. This way he makes sure that he isn’t certain and assertive about his opinion, but at the same time praises the album in a very rich way and then leaves it to the readers to determine and choose their opinion. This review helped me learn how a review must be approached.

Talking doesn’t help?!

Talking doesn’t help?!

– jhanvi jain

I am a person who can not , not talk. Making my friends talk about their feelings aloud when they are low, thinking that after saying things aloud they’ll feel better,is a talent I master in. But after reading the review on Emotional Correctness, I realized how wrong I am. The impact the review created on me, is what I wish my review creates on people. The purpose of the review is to make people think on the same line as the writer thinks, without directly telling the readers. This what the review on Emotional Correctness did. It did not directly “tell” the readers to not force people to vent out their feelings, but instead supported it by various evidences and examples. The author talks about Molly Ivins’s ,“who needs breast anyway?”, Lauren slater’s ,“ repress yourself”. The author uses an example from a real persons life to further prove her point (Mill’s depression) and proves that distraction is a better option to make one cheer up rather than making one let out ones feelings aloud . The author very cleverly starts the review with a example and ends it with a personal statement : ”We caution against pressing, shaming, or subtly coercing anyone into trying to feel more deeply or be more expressive than befits his natural style.” which puts forward his point very clearly and does not make the whole sentence look very dictating. This is what the textbook teaches us too, to make a point and create and impact. To be firm and give our own judgment but without coming out to be commanding. To not just plainly put forward our point but also support it with evidences and examples to make the readers believe in it.

What Makes the Food Good?

As I read, “The Crescent City’s Greatest Po’Boys,” by Steve Garbarino, I was actually starting to get hungry with all of his descriptions. The way in which he describes the mouth watering flavors of all different kinds of po’boys makes me want to pack up my bags and head for New Orleans, which is probably what he had in mind. Even though he doesn’t flat out say, “Come, be a tourist of New Orleans and try our po’boys!” It is completely implied, he doesn’t necessarily pick a place that one should head for, all the different po’boys places they have in New Orleans with exotic recipes, he makes you want to take a trip there. It also goes with the idea that people might actually be already going to New Orleans an want to know what to expect and where to eat. It works both ways really. If someone is taking a vacation down to New Orleans and wants to know the cuisine of the culture or doesn’t want to waste their time and money eating at gross restaurants, they read the reviews of people who have been living there for years. The author assumes that whoever reading this article is interested in new foods and trying new things, they are willing to step out from their horizons. Also as I mentioned, the author doesn’t go into word for word detail about the po’boy, but the characteristics he does mention, like the fluffy but crunchy bread and all the different kinds of meats and sauces really can get your mouth watering if you have those kinds of taste buds. Another thing the author does nicely is put you in a place while you’re eating the food, he gives you a description of the restaurant and some background, which is exactly what the textbook suggests.

Connecting the book with the review

My review will be about a freaky game (Alien: Isolation,) based from the Alien franchise. As this counts as a media review, the most help I’ll get from the context of the book will be from the Pitchfork review.

Zoladz uses a variety of tools to categorize the album she reviews, something that I’m going to use quite heavily. Her excellent use of vocabulary however, I feel is the aspect to what makes this a very powerful and thorough review.  Another key thing that works for Zoladz is her attention to detail and her organizational structure; she mentions the important details of each song whilst simultaneously incorporating a perfect structure to the essay.

A few days ago in class, we had a question that said can we have negative and positive remarks in the same review? We got that answer reflected here as Zoladz mentions both of the criteria in her review.  I’ll be using this review as aid to writing my personal review of the game and I’m going to try to be as cohesive and as organized as she is.

Writing to Evaluate

“Writing to Evaluate”; the chapter 8 of the textbook teaches us about the different ways that we can produce an evaluative essay and teachers the writer’s role as an evaluator. The author  of the book administers the readers with examples of different evaluative essays. There were a great deal of things that I noticed about the examples essays. For example, they all were in different genres, this helped the readers as it provided them with different examples of essays in different genres. Some of the readers are interested in designing their essay in different ways and they had an example provided to them.

Another thing was that they were written in different platforms for different audiences. This meant that they had to be written in different styles. This helps the readers keep their platforms and audience in consideration when writing their evaluative essay and design a style that is suitable for their audience. The examples show the readers how the style of the essay can be changed based on the targeted audience of the text.

For example, “The crescent City’s Greatest Po’Boys”‘s genre is Food and Drinks. So it shows the readers that want to create an evaluative essay on Food and Drinks genre how to go about them. Personally, I want to write my review essay on a restaurant and this example helped as it showed me how to structure my essay and take in consideration the purpose and  the audience of my review.

As  I reread about Po’Boys essay, I learned some hints as I write the review of album of singer. Since I never wrote review, I had no idea about how much formal do I have to get. Most of short reviews from online was pretty short and rather have no form. However, I found the clue of how much do I have to formal as I read the essay.

One of the most impressive thing from essay was that writer inserted picture. Picture helped me to understand about writer’s claim and to maintain focus as I read. Writer quoted from other sources that was related to restaurant he researched.

I will be  specific and clear just as the essay was. I will compare my review album to other genres and albums to explain my album and analyze the instrument that my album used, and what instrument other album use mostly. Furthermore, to be fair, I will put both negative side and positive side of album as I review
